Mexican director Fernando Frías de la Parra loves shooting on borders. Not only the geographic—also the cultural, those of class and, in cinematic terms, of genre. He has shown that in his previous film, I’m No Longer Here (2019), and he does it again in I Don’t Expect Anyone to Believe Me, a violent cop film that is also a comedy, sometimes a romantic film (in its own way), and other times, a screwball, but which is always eager to laugh at its own time. Juan Pablo is a literature student who has just won a scholarship in Barcelona, but before leaving Mexico, he sees himself involved in some business with a drug cartel that forces him to fulfill a “request” in Spain.
